Government passes information on transfer of mortal remains of members of Petrović Njegoš Dynasty

Podgorica, Montenegro (27 December 2018) -- Minister of Culture Aleksandar Bogdanović presented the Information on the transfer of mortal remains of members of the Petrović Njegoš Dynasty, which was passed by the Government of Montenegro at today's session.
"The recently adopted Resolution of the Parliament of Montenegro, as well as the centenary of the exile of the Petrović Njegoš Dynasty, obliges us to pay special attention to resolving and marking key identity issues, promoting the Montenegrin history, its most important rulers and events," Minister Bogdanović told a press conference following the Cabinet session.
"In that regard, the Government of Montenegro passed the Information on the transfer of mortal remains of members of the Petrović Njegoš Dynasty, proposing the transfer of the remains of Mihailo Petrović Njegoš, buried in France, to Cetinje, as well as the remains of three sons of King Nikola - Prince Danilo and Duke Mirko, buried in Vienna, and Prince Petar, buried in Italy," said Minister Bogdanović. "By this act, the Government of Montenegro recognised the need to undertake specific activities in order to correct a part of the historical injustice towards the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty," he added.
In order to implement the Initiative, the Ministry will also establish a coordination committee for the transfer of the remains of the descendants of the Petrović Njegoš Dynasty from Italy, France and Austria, with the task of organising and coordinating activities by the end of 2019. The coordination committee will also be in charge of proposing, by the end of the second quarter of 2019, the setting up of the Organising committee for the ceremonial reception and funeral, which will include experts in the field of history, culture and the media. The realisation of these activities will include the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Property, the National Museum and the Old Royal Capital of Cetinje. Furthermore, the Ministry of Culture suggested to consider the Orlov Krš, which is in the immediate vicinity of Mausoleum of Bishop Danilo, and is one of the historic symbols, as the place where the remains of members of the dynasty will be buried,
"Petrović Njegoš Dynasty is an unavoidable factor in our culture, tradition and identity, who, after almost 221 years of rule and governance of Montenegro, after the end of the First World War, as an ally dynasty, was illegitimately and illegally detonated and expelled by the Decision of the "Podgorica Assembly" on the unification of the people of the Kingdom of Montenegro and the Kingdom of Serbia, as well as by the Decision on the detention of the Petrović Dynasty, in order to enable the creation of a unitary state with Serbia, under the Serbian dynasty Karadjordjević. This political decision was a precedent and a unique example in Europe that one of the victorious states in the First World War, which in terms of its possibilities had made a remarkable contribution to the victorious forces of Antanta, was erased from political life and annexed by the neighbouring state. This violent act endangered state, religious, cultural, and national foundations of Montenegro, and marked the beginning of one of the darkest historical periods in the Montenegrin history," Minister Bogdanović concluded.
