PM Marković's response to Vijesti: You must cooperate with competent state authorities in fight against hacker attacks on your site

Prime Minister Duško Marković said that news agency Vijesti, which asked him yesterday to personally inquire about the outcome of hacker attacks on its website, failed to submit a report to the Police Directorate with the necessary data on hacker attacks, adding that more adequate cooperation and communication between editor and administrator of Vijesti and their foreign provider and the competent state authorities of Montenegro is necessary for further criminal investigation.

"On the occasion of your public address regarding hacker attacks on the portal www.vijesti.me, I want to inform you that I immediately requested the Police Directorate's statement regarding your allegations. Their answer clearly shows that your news outlet has not officially reported the attacks about which you have sent me a letter, but upon obtaining actual knowledge the officers of the High-Tech Crime Group contacted your editor in order to get more information about the source of the attacks on the Vijesti portal, and who stands behind them. However, the Police Directorate has not received a report with the necessary data on hacker attacks, which is justified by the fact that the foreign company is in charge of maintaining cyber security of your portal, and that you cannot submit the requested report. Therefore, the authorities under the jurisdiction of this Government have launched an investigation into cyberattacks on your portal, and the report on attacks is necessary in order to obtain data that will enable the police to conduct further criminal investigations," the Prime Minister noted in a letter addressed to Marijana Bojanić, Executive Director of Daily Press, publisher of the daily newspaper Vijesti.

PM Marković emphasised that cyberattacks on the Vijesti portal are not a lonely case, nor an exception, and that only in January this year, tens of thousands of cyberattacks were registered and rejected, which were directed from different addresses to the infrastructure of state authorities.

"An effective response to this kind of criminal activity, which has international proportions, is a serious challenge for institutions. Therefore, with our partners, we develop institutional and operational capacities for their suppression and elimination. I remind you that the protection and security of your portal is the responsibility of the foreign provider you have engaged, and I want to point out that in this case, it is necessary to have more adequate cooperation and communication with the competent state authorities, both of provider and editor and administrator of your portal," Prime Minister Duško Marković stressed in the letter sent to the Daily Press Executive Director Marijana Bojanić.
