Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić said today at a Budapest Process Ministerial Conference in Istanbul that migration is one of the biggest global security challenges that has shown a clear need for a unified response based on trust, partnership and greater cooperation.
"Migration is a shared responsibility of all states - we all need to work together. That is precisely why today's participation in this gathering is a confirmation of our commitment to further improve cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination," Minister Nuhodžić noted.
Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Turkey Süleyman Soyla, who invited Minister Nuhodžić to Turkey, opened the conference stressing that Europe should take measures to combat racism and discrimination and should adopt the motto "unity in diversity" in resolving the issue of migration.
Speaking to the participants, Minister Nuhodžić emphasised the need to further improve coordination and cooperation in the field of combating illegal migration and suppression of smuggling networks.
"It is important that citizens feel safe, and therefore we want to reduce the potential risks of illegal migration to a minimum in a coordinated way through efficient and comprehensive measures. This is in the interest of our European future, a more stable region integrated into the European family, as well as Europe that is strong enough to resist the challenges posed by migration, organised crime and terrorism," the Interior Minister stressed.
Nuhodžić highlighted that Montenegro, as a responsible member of NATO and the country that is in the EU accession negotiations process, is continuously making significant efforts to strengthen the institutional framework in order to provide support to safe and orderly migration, as well as respect for human rights.
Speaking about cooperation with partner services from the region and Europe, Minister Nuhožić pointed out that Montenegro has intensive regional and international police cooperation, as well as cooperation with EU agencies, through exchange of experience and best practice.
"This is the first conference I attend after Montenegro signed the Agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). This agreement shows that our country is a reliable partner in all common challenges that Europe faces on the external borders," Nuhodžić said.
On the margins of the conference, Minister Nuhodžić spoke with Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria Mladen Marinov and Director General of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and former Vice-Chancellor of Austria Michael Spindelegger.
