Government welcomes beginning of grit removal, remedial of ecological black spot in Bijela

Podgorica, Montenegro (19 March 2019) -- The Government of Montenegro welcomes the beginning of the removal of grit from the former Shipyard in Bijela and ecological remedial within the protected environment of the UNESCO site.

In this way, Montenegro demonstrates responsibility for the safety of citizens and the environment, as well as its ability to respond to the obligations under Chapter 27 - Environment.

For the project of removal of grit and soil remedial, which is the biggest ecological project after the rehabilitation of the slag heap in Mojkovac, the Government will invest EUR 23 million through a World Bank's loan. About 5,000 tons were taken from Bijela yesterday, and close to 150,000 tons of grit were found on the site. Of this, according to estimates, 55,000 tons is hazardous waste, 23,000 non-hazardous, and the rest is contaminated land.
