At today's session, the Montenegrin Cabinet passed a Decision on the opening of the Consulate General of Montenegro in Istanbul. Through the expansion of the network of diplomatic and consular missions, the Government is meeting the needs and interests of the Diaspora – Montenegrin emigrants, with the aim of solving their status issues in a more efficient and effective way, as well as improving their relationship with the homeland.

The opening of the Consulate General in Istanbul acknowledges years of petitions from Montenegrin emigrants and associations from Istanbul, who repeatedly pointed out the problem of the distance of the Embassy of Montenegro in Ankara. Namely, the number of Montenegrin emigrants in Istanbul is estimated at approximately one hundred thousand. There are four associations in Istanbul that bring together Montenegrin emigrants.

The important reason for the opening of the Consulate General in Istanbul is the adequate provision of consular services and the protection of Montenegrin citizens. The Government also took into account the fact that Istanbul is an airline hub to many international destinations, which is why it serves as a transit city for a significant number of passengers from Montenegro. Bearing in mind the aforementioned, the capacities of the Consulate General will be focused on providing adequate consular assistance and services in this area.

Furthermore, the important reason for the opening of the Consulate General in Istanbul is the possibility of increasing the volume of economic cooperation with Turkey.
