Minister of Science of Montenegro Dr. Sanja Damjanović met today with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Montenegro, H. E. Alison Kemp.
Minister Damjanović welcomed the British Ambassador and familiarised her with the key activities of the Ministry of Science, emphasising especially the importance of the Regional Project for the Establishment of the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST), relevant not only to Montenegro, but also to the region of South East Europe as a whole. According to her, the Ministry of Science strived to utilise the SEEIST project to promote regional cooperation in the field of science and technology, as well as the efforts to tackle the common challenges in the field of economic growth and social cohesion.
Through its mission of “Science for Peace”, the project would contribute to strengthening research potentials, reducing the outflow of talents, enhancing the links between science and economy, and boosting the economic development of the region itself. Therefore, the project intended to show that the mission of science was not to serve science, but society, Damjanović said.
Ambassador Kemp thanked Minister Damjanović for a comprehensive presentation, welcoming the project whose core was regional cooperation, as well as the efforts invested by the minister to implement the project. In this regard, Ambassador Kemp expressed the readiness of Great Britain to support the transformation of the region towards digitisation and technological advancement, indicating in particular how important it was to present the project and other similar initiatives in the summits to be held in London next week and in Poznań (Poland) in mid-April.
The interlocutors agreed that it was necessary to obtain support for the SEEIIST project by the member states of the Berlin Process, as well as that future actions would be taken with a view to obtaining that support.
On behalf of the Ministry of Science, Branka Žižić presented the guidelines received from the European Commission in order to create an entrepreneurial innovation ecosystem, underlining that donor support was envisaged in the implementation phase. Ambassador Kemp said that Great Britain had started some projects of support to the region in the field (Digital Cities in 2018), as well as that she would like to have an insight into the implementation of the entire cycle of “Theory of Change”, in order for interventions of the country to have a stronger impact. In this regard, the Programme of Incentives for Innovative Start-ups adopted by the Government of Montenegro and the recommendations of the European Commission within the Policy Support Facility presented exactly the support aimed at facilitating the decision-making of the donors.
