Podgorica, Montenegro (24 May 2019) – Prime Minister Duško Marković assessed at a joint session of the Government of Montenegro and the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia that there is not a single open issue between the two countries, that Montenegro and North Macedonia share the same values and foreign policy commitments, but that the governments have to make additional efforts to implement projects and establish more intensive economic cooperation, so that the results could lead to qualitative progress and valorization of great potential in numerous economic branches.
"We are glad that you are here and that the first official visit of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev to Montenegro served as an ideal opportunity to gather us in Podgorica. This is also the first joint cabinet session that we organise in Montenegro, which sufficiently talks about the importance we attach to relations with our Macedonian friends. Montenegro and North Macedonia have a lot in common, starting from the experience of coexistence in the same country, to preserving peace in the key historic moments, and firmly incorporating multiculturalism, multi-ethnicity and intercultural tolerance into the foundations of the statehood of our countries. North Macedonia is a country with which Montenegro does not have a single open issue, and is leading an intense dialogue at all levels with its officials. ... Montenegro and North Macedonia share the same values and foreign policy commitments. In the domain of regional relations in the previous period, we have worked intensively in the framework of the Berlin Process and the Western Balkans Six, but also in about 30 regional organisations and mechanisms. The goal is to strengthen confidence and strengthen the connectivity process in the region, which is not at the level that must be in the modern world, which is a key precondition for long-term and sustainable progress and stability in this region. However, there is still a lot of work ahead of us. We need to make additional efforts to implement projects and establish more intensive economic cooperation, so that the results lead to qualitative progress," Prime Minister Duško Marković said at the opening of the joint cabinet session.
Government of the Republic of North Macedonia has shown that it can constructively address the most complicated issues
Congratulating the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia, headed by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, on finding room to act and decidedly starting to resolve open issues with neighbours at the key moment of history, Prime Minister Duško Marković said that the Government of North Macedonia has shown that it is a credible partner and that with proper approach and leadership can solve the most complicated issues in a constructive way, with the desire to come to a solution, taking into account at the same time vital national interests. "It's not often in the Balkans. Good neighbourly cooperation and the European perspective of the region have no alternative, and in this spirit should be approached to mutual relations and resolving of open issues. ... I am convinced that the European Union will recognise the efforts that the Government of North Macedonia invested over the last two years, by resolving open bilateral issues with its neighbours, as well as through the results of internal reform initiatives. The evaluation of what has been achieved means only one thing – the opening of the negotiation process. In this regard, I would like to emphasise once again that the Montenegrin experience gained in the negotiation process is fully at the disposal of the Macedonian institutions," PM Marković said.
Excellent cooperation between Montenegro and Republic of North Macedonia in Euro-Atlantic integrations
As a positive example of effective cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister of Montenegro referred to the Euro-Atlantic integration, saying that Montenegro was one of the first countries to ratify the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the Accession of North Macedonia on 1 March 2019. Furthermore, he added that we are proud that North Macedonia received an invitation for NATO membership during Montenegro's presidency of the US-Adriatic Charter. "Today's signing of the Agreement on the Protection and Exchange of Classified Information deepens our cooperation in the security sector, and we expect that the relations and ties of the two countries in this area will be particularly strengthened when North Macedonia becomes the 30th member of the NATO family," Prime Minister Duško Marković concluded at the opening of the joint session of the Government of Montenegro and the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia.
