Press release: Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic meets rapporteurs of the CoE Parliamentary Assemblys Monitoring Committee Milos Budin and Jones Cekuolis

Today in Podgorica, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic met with Milos Budin and Jonasa Cekuolis, rapporteurs of the CoE Parliamentary Assemblys Committee monitoring the implementation of obligations undertaken in the course of the State Unions accession to the Council of Europe.

The meeting discussed bilateral cooperation between the Montenegrin Government and relevant authorities and bodies of the Council of Europe and it was agreed that the CoE had provided a strong developmental impulse to certain aspects of social life in Montenegro. This particularly refers to the harmonization of local legislation with European standards, implementation of reforms in state administration, local governance, judiciary, interior affairs, educational system etc., which encouraged the overall democratization in the Republic.

The Prime Minister commended the Council of Europes understanding for Montenegros specificities when preparing the cooperation program, and expressed hope that such approach would be adopted by other organizations and institutions.

The Prime Minister acquainted the rapporteurs with the current political and economic developments in Montenegro, the level of macroeconomic stability mirrored, inter alia, in a higher inflow of foreign direct investment. He affirmed Montenegros strong commitment to reform, aimed at meeting the requirements for European and transatlantic integration, i.e. admission to the EU and NATO.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister presented to his guests Montenegros proposal for the rearrangement of relations within the State Union in accordance with international standards.

Rapporteurs Budin and Cekuolis observed that progress had been made in socio-economic developments in the past period, which was confirmed by a positive Feasibility Study for the opening of negotiations for Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union. They expressed understanding for the presented views and positions and reiterated the readiness of the Council of Europe to provide all the necessary support in order to secure prompt fulfillment of obligations associated with the membership in that organization, arguing that the implementation of the designed programs and further reform brought the overall political and economic system closer to the EU standards.

The meeting was attended by Marjaz Gruden, Secretary of the CoE Parliamentary Assemblys Monitoring Committee.
