Students to benefit most from EU membership

Students will benefit most from Montenegro’s EU membership, since they will directly experience European standards and regulations, said Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljevic.

Students of the Faculty of Economy visited on Friday the EU Integration Office and spoke with the members of the negotiation structure about Montenegro’s EU accession, with the attention to the challenges this process brings in the field of Montenegrin financial system and economy.

Drljevic stressed out that public opinions surveys show that the youth believe most in the EU integration process and have highest expectations from it.

He introduced the students with the dynamics of the negotiation process and the new approach in the negotiations which means that chapters 23 and 24 are in the center of the process.

Students were interested in how hard it is to meet requirements and close chapter 17, if Euro will remain the national currency after joining the EU, as well as if chapter 27 and envisaged investment in the amount of €1.4 billion would be a burden for the Montenegrin budget.

The negotiation structure representatives stated that, although the amount of €1.4 billion seems terrifying now, it will be stretched to several years and it would be a burden that Montenegrin budget definitely can withstand.

Asked if Montenegro can become a member by 2025, they explained that this year represents a perspective and not a deadline.

The visit was organized within the project EU4ME, financed by the EU and carried out by UNDP.
