Today, in Budva, in the Splendid Hotel, the International Conference "Joint Response in the Area of Suppression of Illegal Migration and its Impact on Terrorism", organized and hosted by the Montenegrin Police Directorate, was opened by the Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić, Director of the Police Directorate Veselin Veljović, EUROPOL Executive Director Catherine De Bolle, Director of the Central Directorate for Migration and Border Police of the Republic of Italy Massimo Bontempi and Vice President of the Federal Police of the Federal Republic of Germany Jürgen Schubert.

At the opening of the conference, it has been said that the management of illegal migration requires a unique approach, and that the joint action of the countries of the region and the wider and harmonized modalities of addressing these challenges can give the most effective results.

MUPInterior Minister Mevludin Nuhodžić said that today's conference is a good opportunity for participants to confirm readiness and determination to build a common response to the dangers posed by global terrorist threats, the challenges of illegal migration and other forms of crime. United we can achieve a lot, and every exchange of experiences helps in creating long-term policies, as well as a system that is resistant and adaptable to changes that are happening more and more rapidly in the modern world, said the Minister, with the expectation that today's discussion will further affirm the activities and results of the Government Montenegro in the light of negotiations for full membership in the European Union, and the implementation of obligations under negotiation chapters 23 and 24, which, in addition to organized crime, include also migration and the fight against terrorism.

MUPDirector of the Police Directorate, Veselin Veljović, pointed out that international cooperation is an important instrument in addressing security challenges, such as integrated border management and illegal migration, because through a single approach, threats can be more effectively addressed and measurable results achieved, in particular through the form of establishing strong cross-border cooperation. The fact that the Montenegrin territory has so far been used to a lesser extent for the transit of foreign fighters must not mislead, especially because of the events that we are all witnessing, both in Europe and beyond. For this reason, full attention is paid to international police cooperation and the participation of Montenegrin police in all projects and activities related to terrorism, in order to timely exchange information and act preventively in this regard, said Director Veljović.

EUROPOL's Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle, who is visiting the region for the first time, stressed that the countries of the Western Balkans and the European Union share the same challenges and threats, and that the issue of managing illegal migration should be addressed by joint efforts. De Bolle said that Montenegro is a reliable partner of the European Union and law enforcement agencies in addressing contemporary security challenges and threats.

The conference is attended by about 70 participants from 13 countries. Participants are police delegations from all countries in the region and several countries of the European Union (Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Croatia and Slovenia), as well as representatives of international organizations, including EUROPOL and the Embassies of foreign countries in Montenegro.

Participants will exchange views, experiences and good practices in the field of combating illegal migration, migration management, and the impacts of illegal migration on terrorism, while recognizing the types of cooperation and common response to addressing these challenges of relevance to both the region and European Union countries.
