Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović is paying visit to the CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where she met with European Commissioner for Research and Innovation Carlos Moedas.

The Commissioner expressed great satisfaction of seeing the Minister at the place where she had worked for so long and thanked CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, who enabled this meeting. Minister Damjanović expressed her gratitude to Commissioner Moedas for his continued support to the SEEIIST project, bearing in mind that he was one of the first Brussels officials who supported the project and understood its significance and value for Southeast Europe. Thanks to his influence, the SEEIIST received the first EUR 1.2 million from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, which will allow the transition to the second phase of this project. Damjanović and Prof. Herwig Schopper, former Director-General of CERN and the designer of the SEEIIST project, informed the Commissioner about activities planned for the next phase, creating a detailed Design Study, which has already begun.

Moedas pointed out that he will continue to follow the development of the SEEIIST in the future and try to maximally help its further progress. "It's remarkable that you have the support of my colleague Jean Eric Paquet, Director-General of the Directorate for Research and Innovation, whose opinion is highly appreciated in Brussels, and from the very beginning he understood the value of the SEEIIST for the region," he said.

He said that the SEEIIST is an outstanding example of the "science for peace", as it will enable the integration of all countries in the region and their further progress and development. The Commissioner once again compared the SEEIIST to the SESAME project in Jordan, which is a great example of the "science of peace" in the Middle East. This project is recognised and financially supported by the EC.

The meeting discussed the SEEIIST Kick-off meeting, planned for 18 September in Budva, which will officially announce the beginning of the first phase of the project.
