The support and greater presence of the European Union in the Western Balkans is a powerful incentive for the improvement of regional cooperation and the approach of this part of Europe to the community of nations and people to which it essentially belongs, Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević said at the Poznan summit.
Drljević talked about the transformation of the Western Balkans on the European integration path.
"Given its history, culture, multi-ethnic ambiance and significant economic potential, this region is an ally of the EU in achieving our common goal - overall progress. Regardless of other challenges, or precisely because of them, the Western Balkans must remain in the EU's focus," he stressed.
In that sense, Drljević emphasised the Berlin Process as an initiative that intensified cooperation among the countries of the region through significant development projects, especially in the field of transport and energy, which contribute to economic growth and reduce the lagging behind the EU member states.
"Closer cooperation is in our common interest, because it is the best way to provide citizens with economic and social benefits and security. A good infrastructure connection with the region, and then the EU member states, is a precondition for economic growth and new jobs through attracting foreign investment. In that direction, Montenegro is continuously working on the development of national transport and energy infrastructure and promoting closer economic cooperation at the regional level," the Chief Negotiator stressed.
"Citizens expect the EU to make decisions based on mutual trust and understanding, as well as to encourage further demanding reforms by timely acknowledging progress and achieved results. By creating and implementing national policies and through commitment to cooperation, we all clearly say that the region of the Western Balkans does not want to be on the margins of Europe," Drljević added.
