Podgorica, Montenegro (5 July 2019) – Freedom of information implies not only the right of the media to disseminate information without limitations, but also the right of citizens to receive objective and accurate information, Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin emphasised at the opening of the conference "Principles of Media Ethics in the Media and the Public".

DPM Pažin assessed that information cannot be objective and accurate without the ethical foundation of the media. He expressed, in this context, the Government's full readiness to support the efforts of the media community to establish an effective system of self-regulation.

"The Government will not spare effort or means to facilitate the establishment of a functioning self-regulatory media mechanism, without any ambition of the Government to interfere in the editorial policy of the media, and even less to arbitrate the issue of media ethics. Our desire is to help the establishment of this mechanism because we recognise the great potential for a democratic society that is concealed and unused when it comes to self-regulation of the media," he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that the position of the media as the "fourth branch of government" and the democratic conscience of society implies the responsibility of the media to respect ethical standards of objective and accurate reporting.
