Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and European Union Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn met today in Belgrade.

Commissioner Rehn congratulated the Prime Minister on the opening of negotiations on a Stabilization and Association Agreement and emphasized the importance of all stakeholders having a constructive attitude, in order to make as much progress as possible in the following months, in line with the twin-track model.

Emphasizing that European integration was always high on the Governments agenda, Prime Minister Djukanovic acquainted Commissioner Rehn with the ongoing activities and results achieved in that respect. By the same token, he also informed Mr Rehn in detail of the Governments preparation for efficient management of negotiations on the Stabilization and Association Agreement, aimed at fulfilling international commitments.

Having stressed that we had made a choice in favor of European prospects and European future, Prime Minister Djukanovic reiterated the intention to organize a referendum on Montenegros statehood status in spring next year, in accordance with the Belgrade Agreement and the Constitutional Charter. He pointed out that the referendum would be conducted in line with the best European practices and standards and that it would not affect the quality of negotiations on the Agreement.

Commissioner Rehn commended the Governments commitment to the forthcoming negotiations on the Agreement, as well as the resolution to conduct the referendum in a democratic atmosphere and in line with international standards.
Both parties expressed the belief that their cooperation and partnership would continue and grow stronger.
