PM Marković: There was no ban or legal basis for state funeral of deceased Momir Bulatović

Podgorica, Montenegro (17 July 2019) -- There was no ban or legal basis for organising the state funeral of the first directly elected President of Montenegro Momir Bulatović, Prime Minister Duško Marković said at today's Prime Minister's Questions session, answering a question by Andrija Mandić from the Democratic Front's Parliamentary Club.
"The Law on the President prescribes the rights of the former presidents of Montenegro who performed this duty after the restoration of state independence of Montenegro, that is, after 2006. Other applicable regulations foresee state funerals for current holders of functions, and exceptions may be made if a special decision is reached in an appropriate procedure. Therefore, there was no legal basis for the state funeral, nor an initiative to make a special decision in that regard," said the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Marković said that Momir Bulatović, as the first directly elected president of the Republic of Montenegro, left a professional and political trail in Montenegro's recent history, and that the country sent a delegation - the Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister Foreign Affairs - to express condolences to the family.
The Prime Minister said that the Democratic Front could have launched an appropriate burial procedure with state honours, instead of politicising the topic.
