PM Marković: We remain committed to our priorities, our opinion poll shows greater confidence in Government

Podgorica, Montenegro (22 July 2019) -- The Government of Montenegro remains committed to its programme objectives, monitors opinion polls, but it does not define its priorities and policy based on them, Prime Minister Duško Marković stressed, answering journalists’ questions after the round table "Cooperation between the Government and NGOs in EU negotiation process".
Asked to comment on the latest CEDEM opinion poll, which notes that citizens' confidence in the Government and in the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) has declined, the Prime Minister emphasised that he would not make any comment due to the fact that he had read only the basic information from the research.
He added that he has been regularly provided with opinion polls, which he reads and analyses in details, particularly when it comes to the Government's policies, their implementation and the citizens’ reaction and that they are very affirmative for the Government, the most of the misters and the Democratic Party of Socialists, and that they differ a lot from the CEDEM opinion poll.
"I do not bring it into question, I do not question its relevance either, but I am talking about other opinion polls that show that the DPS is far above the percentage showed by the CEDEM opinion poll, that the Government enjoy much greater confidence, that other institutions as well are very highly positioned among the citizens, such as the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Sports," PM Marković pointed out, adding that he is not concerned and that they remain consistent and committed to the Government’s priorities.
Concerning the public trust in the EU, the Prime Minister noted that the Montenegro’s citizen’s trust in the EU is undisputed and that, in the case of referendum, over 70 % would support Montenegro’s membership in the EU.
A journalist expressed interest in relation to the recent statement by the Prime Minister regarding a new political offer. The Prime Minister made it clear that he had not spoke about the mechanisms, but about readiness of the DPS.
"I spoke at a political gathering and said that DPS is a responsible political party and that it needs to find a response to this situation. We are ready to come up with a solution that would ensure political dialogue, political consensus and that would result in elections that both political parties and citizens would have confidence in, and that would lead to the results that would not be brought into question," said PM Marković.
He reiterated that since the beginning of his mandates, he has been calling on the opposition to enter the government, not a technical one, but the government with full political and professional capacity, to return to the Parliament and work on the preparation of election legislation within the working group: "That is the way to provide consensus that would be acceptable to all political stakeholders and afterwards to discuss a mechanism that would ensure the fulfillment of these conditions or enforcement of laws passed in the Parliament."
He pointed out that the technical government is not an option at this moment, but that the DPS is ready to offer a model that could be a way out of this situation and which could build more confidence in the elections that are ahead of us. When asked when this could be expected to be done, he said that the party now gives priority of the upcoming Congress, and that, after constituting the party's bodies, they will consider what the DPS could offer.
