Press release: Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic meets personal envoy of the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Ambassador Miroslav Lajcak

Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic met in Podgorica today with Ambassador Miroslav Lajcak, the personal envoy of the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy.

During an extensive, open and constructive discussion, views were exchanged on the course of Montenegros referendum process so far, and both sides emphasized the need for the process to be managed in full accordance with the rules accepted by all participants, in line with European standards.

Ambassador Lajcak, among other things, noted that his visit was another expression of the EUs interest in having the referendum process carried out in a democratic and tolerant atmosphere, in order for its outcome, irrespective of the result, to be a contribution to the stability of Montenegro and the region as a whole. Prime Minister Djukanovic stressed that the pro-independence bloc was pursuing a positive campaign towards that objective and towards the objective of strengthening Montenegros European prospects. He also expressed readiness for utmost political flexibility in the process, to the extent that did not jeopardize Montenegros legal order.

Prime Minister Djukanovic and Ambassador Lajcak agreed to maintain regular contact until the end of the referendum process, emphasizing the importance of European presence in the immediate post-referendum period. Ambassador Lajcak welcomed the Montenegrin Governments intent to pass the Declaration on Accelerating the EU Accession Process, of which he had learned from Prime Minister Djukanovic.

Views were also exchanged on a number of issues of regional importance.
