In cooperation with EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) and Marine Biology Institute (University of Montenegro), the Ministry of Science of Montenegro is organising a molecular biology summer school, which started yesterday and will last until 11 September 2019.

The regional school is organised for the first time in Montenegro and is intended for students of biological, medical and biotechnical sciences. In addition to students from Montenegro, their peers from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia also take part in the school. The idea is to turn the school into tradition and to have the opportunity to enable a certain number of students to familiarise themselves with a new molecular biology area each year.

At the opening ceremony, those present were greeted by Dr. Detlev Arendt, Group Leader at EMBL in Heidelberg, who deals with the study of simple marine animals and their constituent cells. In addition, the school participants were addressed by Dr. Mirko Đurović, Director of the Marine Biology Institute in Kotor, as well as by Đurđina Bulatović, who welcomed the attendees on behalf of the Ministry of Science of Montenegro.

This year’s school, dedicated to single cell sequencing, represents a unique opportunity for students to become acquainted with state-of-the-art molecular biology research techniques. On top of the lectures and practical laboratory work, students will also have the opportunity to learn about the sample collection methods applied in Boka Kotorska Bay, which will be demonstrated by a team of EMBL experts.
