DG Azevêdo marks 25th anniversary of conclusion of Uruguay Round in Montevideo

Director-General Roberto Azevêdo praised Uruguay’s continued leadership in the multilateral trading system during his visit to Montevideo on 12 September 2019. He participated at an event hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mark the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations, which ran from 1986 to 1994 and gave rise to the WTO in its current form. The Director-General also discussed the current situation in global trade, efforts to ease tensions, and the ongoing debate on how to strengthen trade cooperation.
