PM Marković marks start of SEEIIST design phase: Balkans no longer has the right to wait for modern technological solutions to come to us

Budva, Montenegro (18 September 2019) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković opened earlier this morning in Budva an international conference marking the start of the Design Phase of the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST), by noting that the Government of Montenegro, when almost three years ago initiated this project, had a vision that this scientific project, which will benefit not only the Montenegrin citizens but the entire Balkans, meanwhile supported by CERN, GSI and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Commission and six prime ministers of the region.

"We do not have the illusion that our society alone can make a crucial contribution to global progress. But at the same time, it is our obligation and commitment to make the lives of people in this region better, and the longer life expectancy of those who are treated for the most serious diseases quite certain. Montenegro has chosen the path of an active role in global scientific and civilisational progress, without waiting for modern and innovative solutions to be offered to us or to look for us on the map of scientifically underdeveloped countries," said the Prime Minister of Montenegro opening the conference.

Addressing representatives of governments, international organisations, research centres, academia and the business sector, Prime Minister Duško Marković said that the Montenegrin economy has been experiencing steady growth rates for a decade now, and that the development of science should be accompanied by an increase in quality of life.

"And further social and economic development cannot be based on already applied knowledge. For this reason, I would like to say that we will launch discussions on raising salaries in health and education. Appropriations for science need to be accompanied by greater appropriations for those who care about the lives of our citizens, as well as those who educate our children and young people. Without their role, knowledge and energy they provide, scientific achievements will reach their full potential,” Prime Minister Marković underscored.

The Prime Minister stressed that Montenegro needs scientific research projects that, through technology transfer and international cooperation, bring new knowledge, better working methods and a better perspective for work and life.

"The Balkans no longer has the right to wait for modern technological solutions to come to us. Young and educated people will not stay here only because of higher salaries, better roads or hope for a better future. We need an active core of scientific thought, new knowledge and reputable international partners,” Prime Minister Dusko Markovic stated at the opening of an international conference launching the design phase of the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies.
