On the occasion of marking the 28th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Ecological State of Montenegro, the Secretariat-General of the Government of Montenegro and the Union of Municipalities of Montenegro launched an action of planting about 7,400 seedlings of different tree species in all Montenegrin municipalities.

Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism Pavle Radulović pointed out that we are celebrating the 28th anniversary of the Declaration as a country that has protected about 13% of the territory. When we take into account the protection under international agreements, the total area under protection in Montenegro is about 20% of the territory.

Minister of Defence Predrag Bošković said that this action shows responsibility for the grand idea that was created exactly 28 years ago and sends a clear signal that the Government is committed to protecting the environment. Speaking about Sinjajevina, where the Government decided to build a military training ground, the Minister emphasised that it could not endanger the mountain, its biodiversity, and Montenegro as an ecological state.

Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević believes that today's action is a confirmation that there is significant environmental awareness in Montenegro. "Chapter 27 is one of the most significant in our negotiation process and in this way we confirm that we are ready, with all the capacities we have, to tackle all the challenges of this chapter. Environmental protection is a long-lasting process that has no end and it is important that we all participate in this process," he added.

Mayor of Podgorica Ivan Vuković said that today's campaign shows the level of maturity with which people in the Government of Montenegro and local self-governments are considering these issues.

He urged all citizens to read the Declaration on the Ecological State of Montenegro so that they could properly observe their future actions and attitude towards environmental issues.

According to Secretary-General of the Union of Municipalities of Montenegro Refik Bojadžić, all municipalities supported the action. State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Milosav Anđelić said that this is only the beginning of forestation activities that will be carried out on the territory of Montenegro.

Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Montenegro Maglena Plugchieva Aleksandrova urged everyone to join the action, emphasising that every ambassador upon arrival in Montenegro should plant a tree. "Montenegro is a large and beautiful country in a small territory and it should be protected," the Ambassador said.
