The Ministry of Science of Montenegro is organising a special event – “Start of the SEEIIST Design Phase”, which will take place on 18 September 2019 at 9.00 a.m. in Splendid Hotel in Budva, officially confirming the progress made so far and the steps to be taken next in the project implementation. The event will be opened by Mr. Duško Marković, Prime Minister of Montenegro.

The high-level event organised in our country will bring together participants from multiple sectors from Southeast Europe and beyond, such as representatives of governments and international organisations, research centres, academic community, business sector and end users, which will greatly emphasise the scientific content and goals of the Institute, as well as its benefits to society.

Following the development of the Concept Study in early 2018, the project is now entering the Design Study Phase, thanks to the first financial support of the European Commission – Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). Two renowned international research centres, CERN in Geneva and GSI-FAIR in Darmstadt, provide significant support in organisation of the SEEIIST Design Study Phase, whereas the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will support capacity building necessary for the future functioning of this infrastructure.

The core of the SEEIIST project is “Hadron Cancer Therapy and Biomedical Research with Protons and Heavy Ions”, which today represents the most modern and successful method (90% success rate) for the treatment of various types of cancer. In addition to patient treatment, the plan is to allocate as much as 50% of the operating time to cancer research using a large number of different types of ions, which makes the SEEIIST project unique in the world.

One of the goals of the SEEIIST project is to promote regional cooperation in the fields of science, technology and economy in the spirit of CERN’s and SESAME’s model of “Science for Peace”. In this manner, great contribution would be made to addressing the common challenges and needs in Southeast Europe, and in particular to the development of sustainable economy and social cohesion, as well as to capacity-building and slowing down and preventing brain drain as one of the biggest common problems in the SEE region.
