The Regional Meeting of the ICOMOS Network of Southeast Europe began today in Kotor. The event marks the 40th anniversary of entry of the Natural and Cultural-Historical Area of Kotor on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The event is attended by numerous participants from 14 countries, including ICOMOS President Toshiyuki Kono.

Minister of Culture Aleksandar Bogdanovic opened the event and said that he was convinced that the ICOMOS experts' stay in Montenegro would be beneficial for the exchange of knowledge and experience.

The Minister noted that in the last three years we made significant progress in the implementation of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World's Natural and Cultural Heritage. By adopting the Action Plan for the implementation of the 2016 Istanbul Committee's Decision, Kotor status on the UNESCO list has become a strategy of the Government of Montenegro. It is no longer just a matter of the Ministry of Culture or the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Property, but also a matter of all government departments, and this fact has helped us to overcome the various challenges we faced during that period. In anticipation of UNESCO's opinion on the Spatial Plan for Kotor, our attention is particularly focused on the ongoing revision of the Management Plan. We expect a lot from this document, and we urge all relevant institutions to give full support to the Working Team that implements this delicate process, in order to make the document as good as possible, and a good management tool, the Minister said.

President of the Municipality of Kotor Željko Aprcović expressed belief that the visit of ICOMOS experts on this occasion would be important for the exchange of experience, and that it would be beneficial to Kotor in order to find a balance between the preservation of cultural values and the needs of citizens.

ICOMOS President Toshiyuki Kono thanked for the support of all institutions that made this meeting possible. He stressed that the formation of the Montenegrin ICOMOS Association would be extremely important for further activities in the implementation of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Heritage, and that he was extremely happy that the procedure for accreditation of the Montenegrin ICOMOS Association had been completed recently.

Prince Nicholas, on behalf of the Montenegrin ICOMOS Association, stressed that he was extremely happy that the formation procedure had reached the final steps.
