Podgorica, Montenegro (1 October) -- Membership of the Western Balkans in the EU is significant for both the region and Europe and enlargement policy must remain active and real. It was noted at the meeting of Prime Minister Duško Marković and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Pekka Haavisto, who is paying an official visit to Podgorica.
"Enlargement policy is a policy of strategic vision, not only administrative procedures. Montenegro is in the process of reforms in order to strengthen institutions and their ability to manage resources well. We want to join the EU when we are ready, because thus we will add a new value to the Union," PM Marković noted.
Minister Haavisto highlighted Finland's support to the further European perspective and integration of Montenegro, but also the other countries of the Western Balkans. He pointed out the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and the two officials agreed on the significance of further strengthening of economic cooperation, particularly in the areas of energy and tourism.
The meeting discussed the importance of continuing reforms in the rule of law, fight against organised crime and corruption, and freedom of the media, in which Montenegro has achieved good results.
Prime Minister Marković and Minister Haavisto exchanged views on the situation in the region and global challenges in the field of security.
