Reforms in the rule of law area, as a key area for further democratic development of the Montenegro’s society and progress in the negotiations with the EU, are an absolute priority for all institutions of Montenegro, Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević stated at the beginning of the two - day meeting of the Subcommittee on Justice, Freedom and Security between the representatives of Montenegro and the European Commission.
As he said, further improving the rule of law and overall democratic system is permanent and demanding task, but regardless of the challenges, Montenegro remains a highly motivated and unconditionally committed to achieving that aim. The Chief Negotiator stressed that as a result of intensive reform activities in the rule of law area, it is fulfilled most of the total 83 interim benchmarks within Chapters 23 and 24 so far, which are related primarily to the improvement of legislative and institutional framework.
Head of the Unit for Montenegro in the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Thomas Hagleitner, assessed as positive the fact that the institutional framework in the rule of law area is complete and that the legal one is largely in place, highlighting that now it is important that the whole rule of law system is aimed at achieving the concrete results. These results, as he added, will show a strong capacity and the strength of institutions with transparency and further improvement of good relations with civil society and other actors involved in the implementation of action plans in the rule of law area.
