FM Darmanović in Barcelona: Montenegro makes full contribution to UfM work

Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated in the IV Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Forum under the title "Paving the way forward", which was held in Barcelona. 

The introductory session, which was opened by High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Minister of Foreign Affairs the European Union and Cooperation of Spain Josep Borrell and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan Ayman Safadi, presented the priorities of the Union for the Mediterranean for the following year such as environmental protection, treatment of climate change, economic growth and trade, promotion of investments and creation of new jobs. 

High Representative Mogherini pointed to the necessity of creating a safer world for all citizens, bearing in mind all the challenges we are tackling. She welcomed the progress in the Western Balkans when it comes to the European integration process and pointed to the significance of the first EU - League of Arab States (LAS) summit, which was held in February this year. 

Minister Borrell particularly highlighted the importance of combating human trafficking, combating populism and nationalism, interaction with the civil society and the inclusion of the entities that can contribute to tackling the aforementioned issues. 

Foreign Minister Safadi stressed the importance of human development, fight against terrorism and the commitment to cultural dialogue and dialogue of peace. 

Presenting the key projects of the Union for the Mediterranean in the area of climate change and environmental protection, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean Nasser Kamel referred in particular to the commitment to regional cooperation and in this regard to the greater integration.

During the plenary session, Foreign Minister Darmanović presented commitment of Montenegro to the improvement of cooperation in the region and its progress in the integration process. He passed that Montenegro is oriented towards the adoption of the highest standards in environmental protection since it is constitutionally declared as an ecological state. He said that Montenegro strongly supports the Union for the Mediterranean and the Roadmap that was adopted in 2017. "In this line, the cooperation in the area of infrastructure linking, sustainable development, intercultural dialogue and employment is very important,” Foreign Minister Darmanović stated. Speaking about the security challenges, the fight against terrorism and border security, he expressed satisfaction with the signing of a Status agreement on activities within the competence of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Therefore, he assessed as important that the EU and NATO remain active in the Western Balkans region. 

On the sidelines of the Forum, Minister Darmanović also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain and the EU's next chief diplomat Josep Borrell. On that occasion, the two officials discussed the process of the EU enlargement to the Western Balkans region. 

Minister Darmanović also met with Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Greece Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. Key topics of the discussion were related to the European integration and in particular they expressed satisfaction with the green light given to the Report on fulfilment of the benchmarks for opening Chapter 8 – Competition by the official Athens.
