Podgorica, Montenegro (21 October 2019) – Prime Minister Duško Marković met with Secretary of State to the French Minister of the Armed Forces Geneviève Darrieussecq and discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, possibilities for strengthening political and economic ties, cooperation within NATO and the European perspective of our country.

"France has a friend in Montenegro, small but reliable. We want a constant and continuous dialogue with the Government of France," Prime Minister Marković noted.

Secretary of State Darrieussecq stressed that France and its President Emmanuel Macron want to establish partnerships with Montenegro and the Western Balkan countries. She welcomed Montenegro's efforts to democratise and strengthen the rule of law.

The two officials agreed that there was good cooperation in the areas of security, defence, counter-terrorism, migration. Particularly prominent is alliance within NATO, where Montenegro, as PM Marković said, contributes to the achievement of the Alliance's goals.

"The issue of stability and security for the Balkans is a matter of survival," PM Marković said and added that a stronger European Union leadership was needed in this region.

Secretary of State Darrieussecq said that France was not against EU enlargement, but that President Macron believes that the reform of Europe is necessary since it had become too technocratic. She stressed the importance of developing strong policy strategies in a number of important areas, such as defence and migration in particular.

Enlargement policy, Prime Minister Marković said, must be a strategic EU policy, and enlargement must be a political process that should lead to the unification of Europe across the continent.

Furthermore, he pointed out that motives and desire to be a part of the European family, whatever it may look like in the future, are undeniable for Montenegro, and that it wants to gain membership when it is ready to be a new quality and not a burden for the Union.
