Budva, Montenegro (24 October 2019) – The Montenegrin economy has been recording steady growth rates for over a decade, and only growth in the last three years clearly confirms the progress we are making, Prime Minister Duško Marković said at the opening of the conference on economy "Synergy – a key to the regional success", organised by the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro.
"A good FDI trend is a further confirmation of the high-quality business environment and the security of investment we have created. Over EUR one billion of net foreign investment inflow in the last two and a half years is not a coincidence, but a result of commitment," Prime Minister Marković said at the conference in Budva.
However, he pointed out that faster social and economic development could not be based on the resources already applied, but that new ideas, entrepreneurial ventures, modern technologies and better working methods were needed.
"Neither Montenegro nor our Balkan neighbours should look for them in isolated national frames," the Prime Minister noted.
He emphasised that a more attractive social and economic environment is needed to in order that young and educated people stay here, but it is also needed for all of us.
"We need more creative jobs, an active core of scientific thought, new knowledge, credible international partners and centers of economic activity that will appeal not only to ours but also to the residents of neighbouring countries. That is the only way we can respond to contemporary demographic challenges," PM Marković said.
The Prime Minister said that he understands the disappointment with the messages coming from some relevant European addresses in recent days, saying that we should not allow this to be used as an excuse for new stagnation. He estimated that the advancement of our economies was closely linked to the EU accession process, but it doesn’t have to have the same dynamic.
"Montenegro has no dilemma – we are committed to progress, to adopting well-designed European policies, and will be ready to welcome the moment of EU accession. When both parties are ready for it. Because, I will remind, this is a process that we are leading due to free will of the Accession Agreement signatories," the Prime Minister said.
Addressing issues of economic cooperation and regional economic space, Prime Minister Marković said that Montenegro is genuinely committed to every aspect of regional cooperation and that it will make available all its resources and cooperate sincerely on the development of new regional initiatives: "To the extent which is not an alternative but a complement to our European agenda."
He praised the launching of a number of initiatives, notably the Berlin Process, while the formation of the Western Balkans Chamber of Commerce Forum is extremely important for the economy.
