Brussels, Belgium (25 October 2019) -- Minister of Defence Predrag Boškovic took part in a session dedicated to NATO's defence and deterrence policy within the Meetings of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) at the level of Defence Ministers, which took place in Brussels earlier today.
The Allies agree that strengthening collective defence, taking into account the complexity and unpredictability of today's security environment, is critical to enhancing the Alliance's overall security. It was emphasised that efforts should be continued to intensify the readiness of forces to enable them to provide a coherent and rapid response to security threats to the allied Territory, without any restrictions when it comes to possible strategic directions.
Minister Bošković stressed that Montenegro remains committed to working together with others to strengthen defence and deterrence, and that it will continue to implement the Alliance's policies in a responsible manner. The meeting also highlighted the importance of a balanced burden-sharing in order to reach the adopted guidelines, while underlining that investing in national forces also has the effect of strengthening the overall capability and preparedness of NATO forces. Minister Bošković reiterated that Montenegro is committed to reaching the guidelines from the Wales Summit and stated that, accordingly, the country will gradually increase the percentage of defence spending in order to provide the necessary resources to build and strengthen its capacities and capabilities.
He said that ''the biggest impression of this two-day meeting of NATO defence ministers is the unity of the members on the challenges facing the Alliance. I think this is a successful meeting that will allow the Heads of State, who will gather in in London in December, to pursue a policy of peace and security, not only within NATO borders but beyond.
During the meeting, the ministers also addressed the Alliance's position on the termination of the intermediate-range missile elimination agreement, which is a very important element of arms control. It was stated that all members fully support such a decision and agreed, at the Alliance level, to approach the new situation with a balanced and coordinated package of defence measures, with a view to maintaining the credibility of NATO's defence and deterrence.
They also discussed the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, stating that the international community must remain committed to the process of building lasting peace in that country.
