Podgorica, Montenegro (30 October 2019) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković said in the Parliament earlier today that numerous environmental activities are underway in Pljevlja, and that it is about the decisions the Government reached after systematic deliberation, considering its obligation to invest part of the created economic value in the rehabilitation of consequences harming the environment, and the other part into the creation of new high-quality jobs and healthy living environment.

"The rehabilitation of two ecological black sports in Pljevlja is underway. Money has been provided, project documentation has been drafted, contractors have been selected, and field work commenced. Nearly eight million euros will be invested in the Gradac flotation tailing. We will address and eliminate the harmful effects of decades of accumulation of 3.9 million tonnes of toxic material according to all modern standards. These works will be completed by next summer. Similar is the case with the remediation of the Maljevac ash and slag landfill, where the Thermal Power Plant has been depositing ash in the form of diluted sludge since 1982. The first phase of this project will be completed by mid 2020, after which the Electric Power Industry of Montenegro will take over the activities and continue the rehabilitation on the remaining parts of the terrain. As a result of the investment, the total disposal of the Maljevac landfill will amount to almost EUR 21 million, when the funds from the World Bank loans and the Electric Power Industry's own funds are brought together. But most importantly - these activities and works are carried out according to the highest international standards," Prime Minister Duško Marković explained at today's Prime Minister's Questions session in the Parliament of Montenegro answering a question by representative of the Democratic Party of Socialists Danijela Živković, MP, about when the first results of life-saving projects can be expected in Pljevlja, announced by the Prime Minister following the 139th session, which took place in that city.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the ecological reconstruction of the Thermal Power Plant Pljevlja and the heating of the city will be the most important project for air quality in that city, adding that the funds for this project has already been provided.

"First, the money has been provided. An estimated EUR 54 million has been earmarked in the electric Power Industry's accounts for these purposes. The tender for ecological reconstruction was announced with the support of the renowned German company Steag. Three bids have been submitted and are currently being evaluated. I believe that as early as next year, the results will begin to be yielded. The first step will be to ensure the separation of heat from the system of the thermal power plant for the purposes of heating the city. In parallel, the production and preparation of the ordered equipment will begin in the form of special environmental filters,” said the Prime Minister.

He also noted that the effects should be visible from 2021, since the installation processes of the desulphurisation and denitrification plant will be carried out in phases.

Prime Minister Markovic pointed out that all these investments of more than one hundred million euros should be accompanied by a concerted decision on municipal environmental compensation, which will make 2.5 - 3 million euros annually.

“I believe that the activities that are underway and the dynamic deadlines confirm the strategic commitment of the Government to base even faster and even more dynamic development on the principles of sustainability and environmental protection. Therefore, in favor of the quality of life of Montenegrins and the citizens of Pljevlja,” the Prime Minister concluded.
