DPM Pažin: New laws to fight cross-border crime effectively. Protect human dignity of persons who are wholly or partially deprived of their legal capacity

Amendments to the Law on International Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters bring significant innovations to strengthen the mechanisms for combating transnational crime, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Zoran Pažin said today at the Assembly.

The Deputy Prime Minister explained that the main novelty of the proposed amendments to the Law was to identify the authority of the Supreme State Prosecutor to form joint investigation teams, as one of the most effective instruments in the fight against cross-border crime.

Amendments to this law, he said, are improving the extradition procedure, that is, preventing the possibility of abuse of the right to international protection.

Speaking about the proposed amendments to the Law on Non-contentious Procedure, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the new legal solutions provide additional guarantees for the protection of the dignity, rights and interests of the persons who have been subject to the procedure for deprivation of legal capacity and persons who are deprived of their legal capacity.

As a significant novelty, the court's obligation is to periodically review decisions on the deprivation of legal capacity and to check whether there are still reasons for the deprivation of legal capacity. DPM Pažin emphasised that the quality of the proposed legal solutions was significantly contributed by the suggestions of the NGO Association of Youth with Disabilities, which were taken into account and included in the draft law.

Presenting the Law on Legalisation of Public Documents in International Traffic, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the proposed law prescribes a simpler procedure for certification of public domestic and foreign public documents, adding that the new legal text would replace the current 1973 law.
