DPM Pažin in Berlin: Germany strongly supports Montenegro's pro-European policy

Berlin, Germany (14 November 2019) -- Germany very much appreciates and supports Montenegro's perseverance in pursuing pro-European policies in the Western Balkans. This was stated during Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin's meetings with senior officials of the German executive and legislative power in Berlin earlier today.DPM Pažin expressed respect for Germany's strict but fair approach to EU enlargement policy, adding that this principled view of the official Berlin is an encouragement to Montenegro that its further progress towards full EU membership will be based on a realistic evaluation of the results achieved.
At the meeting with Gunther Krichbaum, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, and members of the Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Pažin said that Montenegro can set an example of successful adoption of European values and rules in the Western Balkans. In that context, he recalled that Montenegro is today a full member of NATO, a leader in the European integration process and one of the fastest growing European economies.
Mr Krichbaum noted that Germany has a strong interest in Montenegro continuing on its path to EU membership. "Germany supports Montenegro on its path to the EU. We want Montenegro to join the EU, and progress has been made in a number of areas. Of course, we have not reached our destination yet and of course there is much to be done. But our Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has had a very constructive meeting with your Prime Minister Marković last year when it comes to fighting crime and corruption. We are very determined here, as is the Government of Montenegro. We have developed a very friendly and partnership relationship and this will surely continue in the future” Mr Krichbaum pointed out.
Deputy Prime Minister Pažin stressed that Montenegro will continue to pursue European policy decisively, regardless of the current focus of the European Union on internal affairs and regardless of current differences within the Union regarding the vision of the future of the enlargement process. He welcomed the very balanced position of Germany regarding the so-called Mini Schengen implying that this cannot be a substitute for full membership of the countries of the region in the European Union.
"The essence of Montenegro's European policy is certainly to provide our citizens with a higher standard of living and to build a society that functions according to the rules applying in the most developed European democracies. We are continuing European reforms and will not base our long-term policy on the current decisions of individual EU Member States. We have a clear European course, and we will continue determinedly and persistently to promote the values and standards on which the European Union itself rests,” DPM Pažin concluded.
During a meeting at the German Federal Foreign Office, Special Envoy and Director for Southeast Europe, Turkey and EFTA Susan Sic and EU Policy Director Tomas Osovski expressed Germany's full readiness to support Montenegro in its further progress towards full membership of the European Union based on the results achieved in the area of the rule of law.
DPM Pažin and German Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht signed in Berlin earlier a cooperation agreement between the Federal Ministry of Justice of Germany and the Ministry of Justice of Montenegro. The signing of this agreement creates conditions for regular exchange of information and experience between the two countries in the most important areas of the rule of law, including harmonisation of national legislation with that of the European Union, the fight against organised crime, corruption and economic crime, financial investigations and confiscation of property acquired through criminal activity, judicial cooperation in criminal, civil and commercial matters and other fields.
