Podgorica, Montenegro (18 November 2019) – The Prime Ministers of Montenegro and the Republic of Malta Duško Marković and Joseph Muscat agreed today that the two countries foster good political and economic relations and that they share an opinion on the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries.
"I am pleased to have today the opportunity to host Prime Minister Muscat, with whom I had a very open and constructive exchange of views on a large number of topics of interest to our bilateral relations, strengthening overall cooperation, and the European perspective of Montenegro and the Western Balkans. We very much appreciate Malta's continued support for our reforms towards adopting and implementing European standards and for selflessly sharing their own experience from the process. We are grateful for the understanding and appreciation of the overall efforts made by Montenegro in EU integration, as expressed during Malta's successful EU Council Presidency in 2017, when we temporarily closed two chapters," Prime Minister Duško Marković said following official talks.
Prime Minister Muscat reaffirmed his country's support for our European integration.
"With regard to your European aspirations, Malta has never questioned Montenegro's aspirations. We fully support your country's EU membership. We are aware of the great progress you have made," the Prime Minister of Malta stressed.
Prime Minister Markovicć assessed the decision of the European Council not to open accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania as disappointing.
"I pointed out Montenegro's commitment, after the disappointing decision of the European Council not to open negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania, to continue to fulfill the European agenda with the same dedication with a particular focus on the rule of law, since, for us, the European perspective has no alternative. I emphasised my understanding of the need to complete the EU internal consolidation process related to reflection and the reform of existing negotiation methods. At the same time, I expressed the expectation that this process would proceed in parallel with the progress of the countries in accordance with individual merit," the Prime Minister of Montenegro noted.
Prime Minister Muscat called the European Council's decision wrong.
"We have not been able to come to an agreement, to give a concrete European perspective to our friends in North Macedonia and Albania. It was a wrong decision. … I hope that the European Council will revise this decision, which was wrong historically, strategically and politically," Prime Minister Muscat said.
Speaking about relations between our two countries, the prime ministers emphasised excellent political and economic relations, which confirms today's opening ceremony of the wind farm Možura.
"This is the first time that our state-owned company is entering the territory of another state in one area that is important - it is energy. For us, this is a new lesson and a great sign of the confidence we have in your country," Prime Minister Muscat said and added that vital reason for choosing Montenegro was that our country was a good and safe investment destination.
Prime Minister Marković said that they also discussed number of opportunities for improving cooperation in many fields.
"Tourism, agriculture, healthcare are just some of the fields where we see the potential for stronger cooperation of our countries. … Malta is an example for us of an economically successful small European country that has fully exploited its potential," Prime Minister Duško Marković highlighted.
The Prime Ministers of Montenegro and Malta will attend the official opening of the wind farm in the afternoon.
