Despite internal challenges, the European Union must have a coherent and consistent enlargement policy towards our region, with Member States taking a more consistent approach, especially when it comes to making future decisions, since the integration of the Western Balkans is in mutual interest, Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević stressed.

He said at a conference "From Outsiders to Leaders of EU Integration: Montenegro on the Road to the EU," sponsored by the Paneuropean Union of Bavaria in Furth im Wald, that the Western Balkans is part of what the Union lacks.

"Montenegro is a country that in recent years has succeeded not only in restoring independence, but in decisively and dynamically entering integrative processes in order to take its place in the European community. Montenegro's overall progress and the results we have achieved unequivocally confirm the core commitment to EU membership, with a responsible commitment, benefits and implementation of reforms," Drljević noted.

He believes that Member States should have a consistent approach, especially when it comes to making future decisions, because it is in the EU's interest to integrate the region into the family of European countries.

"A credible enlargement policy is a strategic investment in European security and prosperity and in recent years it has contributed to peace and stability in the Western Balkans. Despite internal challenges, the EU must continue with a consistent enlargement policy towards our region and I really hope that we will soon have a positive signal regarding opening of the last negotiating chapter with Montenegro, but also opening of negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania, " Drljević concluded.
