PM Marković meets with health trade unions: Healthcare budget is largest in Montenegrin history

The Government of Montenegro allocated EUR 280 million for healthcare next year, which is the largest allocation for this segment in the history of our country, Prime Minister Duško Marković said at a meeting with a delegation of respresentatives of the health trade unions - the Independent Trade Union of Health of Montenegro and the Trade Union of Health of Montenegro, led by Ljiljana Krivokapić and Vladimir Pavićević.
"The healthcare budget in 2020 is EUR 100 million higher than it was three years ago when this Government took office. During this period there were significant allocations and investments in infrastructure and staff education and housing. We are now providing an increase in wages for everyone in the healthcare system," PM Marković said.
He specified that EUR 10.3 million were earmarked for the purchase of new equipment, EUR 3.2 million for specializations and EUR 1.9 million for medical training. EUR 1.5 million have been given for the housing fund, and the same amount will be earmarked for the period 2021-2023, and next year a health cooperative will receive EUR 400,000 from the Government to address the housing issue.
Trade unions representatives recognised the Government's efforts in this area but expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed increase in earnings of 9 percent next year and 3 percent in 2021. They believe that the status and position of healthcare workers and non-medical staff must be improved.
Prime Minister Marković agreed that it is extremely important to improve the standard of healthcare workers because of the responsible work they do and the importance for citizens and the state, but that viable rather than populist solutions must be found.
The interlocutors agreed that the healthcare budget is large enough to provide better status for employees, but that models must be sought within the existing financial framework. It was agreed to continue the dialogue in this direction.
