Press release: Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic meets Finlands new Non-Resident Ambassador to Montenegro Ari Heikinen

Finland will support Montenegros application for EU candidacy status in the first half of this year, it was pointed out in todays talks between outgoing Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic and Finlands new ambassador to Montenegro Ari Heikinen.

Ambassador Heikinen expressed his satisfaction at being appointed Finlands diplomatic representative in Montenegro. Having commended the extent of progress and reform carried out in Montenegro, the Finnish Ambassador noted that the very good relations between the two countries represented a solid basis for further development of cooperation, particularly in terms of economy.

Prime Minister Sturanovic voiced his appreciation for Finlands continued support to Montenegros efforts towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration. He pointed out the importance of prompt ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement in parliaments of EU member states. Having communicated Montenegros intent to apply for EU candidacy status in the first half of 2008, Prime Minister Sturanovic asked for Finlands support in that context. He also expressed hope that Finland would take part in the Common Application Center, thus enabling Montenegrin citizens to obtain visas in Podgorica.

Ambassador Heikinen confirmed the his governments readiness to continue supporting Montenegros efforts towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration and Finlands willingness to join the group of countries issuing visas to Montenegrin nationals in Podgorica.

Both sides expressed confidence that economic cooperation would be further promoted in the days to come, particularly in terms of visible trade between the two countries and higher presence of Finnish investors in Montenegro. The forthcoming signing of the Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement between Montenegro and the Republic of Finland will enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
