SEIIST project highlighted as finest example of scientific diplomacy after CERN and SEASAME at Ministerial Conference in Trieste

At the invitation of Minister of Education, University and Research of the Republic of Italy Lorenzo Fioramonti, within Italian Presidency of the Central European Initiative (CEI), Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović took part earlier today in the Ministerial Conference on Science and Research in Trieste.

The Ministerial Conference, supported by the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Italy, the CEI and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, covered a wide range of topics with the key focus on innovation, high education, scientific researches and the improvement of multilateral scientific cooperation. The event, attended by six ministers and twelve heads of delegations of CEI countries, was aimed at strengthening the cooperation among the member states and identifying options and solutions to significant regional and European challenges. In this regard, ministers and heads of delegations of CEI countries discussed about comprehensive strategy for an effective, open and sustainable system of research and innovations and identified possible solutions through which efficient multilateral mechanisms of the scientific cooperation would be established. The Conference covered a variety of topics in a plenary discussion such as scientific diplomacy, capacity building, sustainable development, blue economy, artificial intelligence and others, followed by a ministerial plenary discussion on boosting regional cooperation in science and technology, in order to the sustainable development in CEI countries. At the end, ministers of CEI countries adopted the Science Declaration, which expressed support for the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEIIST), pointing to the significance of science and large international research infrastructures as a basic tools for linking the region countries.

Within the plenary discussion titled "Scientific diplomacy and capacity building", Minister Damjanović presented the SEIIST project. In the line with the topic of the session, at the same time bearing in mind that the project activitiy related to the SEIIST, was nominated as one of the events that needs to be implemented during the upcoming Montenegrin Presidency of the CEI, the Minister highlighted that this project gave the region an opportunity to fight for the first time, to acheive the aim, with scientific diplomacy funds, that would represent a significant scientific and technological step forward for the entire region.
