PM Marković talks to Pietro Parolin: Holy See supports passing Law that will regulate religious freedom and relations between State and religious communities
Vatican City State, Italy (14 December 2019) -- During his official visit to the Holy See, Prime Minister Duško Marković met earlier today with his Vatican counterpart Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and exchanged views on passing the Law on religion freedom or beliefs and legal status of religious communities.
Prime Minister emphasised that Montenegro follows all universal commitments of humanity.
In this regard, after the restoration of independence, the Law we are passing is one of the most demanding acts upon the Constitution. The Venice Commission plenary session assessed this Law as positive, with only one vote against.
The Holy See does not interfere in the internal affairs of Montenegro, but supports passing the law that will regulate issues of religious freedoms and relations between the state and religious communities, in the line with civilizational principles, the Secretary of State noted.
The two officials agreed that the further procedure on the adoption and implementation of the Law should be followed by dialogue and as much compliance as possible, after the approval of the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
Cardinal Parolin stated that Montenegro is an example of a politically and socially stabile country and it is particularly significant that our country has a role of stability and reconciliation in the region. The Holy See Secretary of State fully supports the European perspective of Montenegro and the Region, assessing it as significant for its prosperity and safety and announced the opening of a resident office of the Holy See in Podgorica, in the rank of nunciature.
