Rome, Italy (19 December 2019) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković arrived earlier today in Rome where, at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, he took part in the work of the Summit of the Central European Initiative (CEI).

In addition to the prime ministers of the member states, eight regional and international organisations have been invited to the Summit as special guests, namely the European Commission, Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) and the Council of Europe.

The topic of today's Summit  is "European integration, regional cooperation and business opportunities".

Heads of Delegations will have an opportunity to reiterate the significance of the European integration process, which has no alternative and discuss ways on better use of the CEI capacities for the benefit of European integration, both at political and practical levels, considering existing CEI instruments. Also, the summit will be an opportunity for the heads of delegations to exchange views on how CEI can help the European Union's enlargement to the Western Balkans to remain at the top of the EU agenda and how it can contribute to the establishment of closer ties between the Eastern European partners and the EU.

At the Summit, Montenegro takes over from Italy the rotating chairmanship of this oldest and largest regional mechanism in the Central and Eastern Europe, which brings together 17 countries.

By taking over the one-year chairmanship of the Initiative, which begins on 1 January 2020, Montenegro reaffirms its support for CEI's efforts to build a sustainable and prosperous region, while promoting a credible European perspective of countries aspiring for EU membership.
