Podgorica, Montenegro (20 December 2019) – Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković expressed today his full support for the further work of the Institute for Hydrometeorology and Seismology, assessing the importance of this institution and adding that its timely and reliable announcements represent an important segment of protection of the state and citizens.

"We are witnessing that earthquakes, floods, droughts, fires, and other natural disasters are increasingly testing country's capabilities. There is no risk management without timely and reliable announcements, especially in areas where preventative activity is possible. After decades of dedicated work, commitment and enthusiasm of our employees, today we have an institution that Montenegro trusts, and which represent us worthily to the world," the Prime Minister said at a ceremony organised on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro.

PM Marković said that seventy years of existence are not only seven decades since the establishment of this important civil service, but more important than that - it is seven decades of building and continuous development of an institution that provides timely, accurate and reliable data on the weather, climate and water, creating experience and knowledge relevant to the country and its development.

"The Institute for Hydrometeorology and Seismology is the central pillar of our society in the mission of protecting the lives of our citizens, the cultural and historical heritage of the country, and material goods in general. The diversity and complexity of the activities acquired here is the best evidence of confidence in the quality and work of this service, from its establishment up to the present," the Prime Minister said.

PM Marković praised the development progress made by the Institute in the past few years, which is reflected in the expansion and modernisation of the network of measuring stations and the procurement of new and modern instruments and equipment.

"Effective and accurate forecasting of weather phenomena, especially extreme ones, in an era of ever-increasing negative effects of climate change is a necessity for a developed society. First of all with the aim of early and timely announcement, prevention and mitigation of the consequences of natural events and disasters. The existence of a modern network of stations and radars, and a valid assessment of emerging phenomena, is an obligation to citizens and the state, as well as to our international partners in the field of civil security and protection against hazards. The undeniable reputation that the Institute has earned in numerous European and international organisations confirms that Montenegro is a reliable partner in high-demanding scientific and professional associations of supranational character," Prime Minister Duško Marković concluded.
