DPM Pažin: Citizens to receive law that will be pledge for future, not only response to past

Podgorica, Montenegro (24 December 2019) -- At the session of the Legislative Committee of the Assembly of Montenegro on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin expressed his belief that by passing the Law on Freedom of Religion, citizens should receive a law that will be a pledge for the future, not only a response to the past.
Commenting on the views of Committee members, Deputy Prime Minister Pažin invited everyone to refrain from harsh words and from advocating for any type of violence, including verbal abuse, while emphasizing: "I am sure we have both the strength and the will to remain attentive to arguments and to show respect for opinions that are different from ours. I am ready to discuss this law and any other subject in that fashion."
The state has a constitutional obligation to protect cultural assets, Deputy Prime Minister Pažin pointed out.
"We also have the Law on the Protection of Cultural Property and we also have the Constitution. In a situation where protection of cultural goods is necessary, we need to know who is responsible for that. The state accepts the responsibility to protect the cultural heritage that belongs to all citizens," the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
“The 1905 French law stipulated that all churches built before 1905 were state property. Do you think anyone has prevented believers in France from enjoying their religious rights, of from practicing their faith because some religious building, being a cultural asset, has been registered as the property of the French state? Does anyone prevent the followers of the Serbian Orthodox Church from practicing their faith at the St. Sava Temple in Belgrade, due to the fact that the temple is registered as the property of the Republic of Serbia? Do you know is the registered owner of the temples in the Russian Federation, which is your ideological role model, I have nothing against it, I’m just stating that fact? Does it bother the believers in Russia that the Russian Federation is registered as the owner of the church property?" Deputy Prime Minister Pažin stated in response to the questions raised by the MPs from the opposition Democratic Front.
