Podgorica, Montenegro (31 January 2020) – Montenegro is successfully fulfilling its reform agenda, making progress in economic policy, stabilising public finances and working to create the conditions for a better life for all its citizens, Prime Minister Duško Marković and Executive Director of the Dutch Constituency at the World Bank Koen Davidse said at a meeting.

"We have achieved remarkable results over the past three years: our economy has grown at impressive rates, our public finances have been strengthened and stabilised, we have collected EUR 350 million more in revenue and have constituted the largest Capital Budget to finance the construction of all infrastructure in the country," PM Marković said.

He pointed to an employment increase of over 25,000 more employees over the three years. Prime Minister Marković stressed that the Government must remain strongly committed to European integration, economic development, maintaining financial discipline and expansion of taxpayers scope through the fight against the grey economy.

Davidse said that everyone should congratulate Montenegro on what it has achieved so far, as well as on its visionary moves to combat climate change and turn the country towards renewable energy. He added that relations between Montenegro and the World Bank are very good and that cooperation will continue.

"2020 is a good year for Montenegro. The numbers look good, as does public finance management," Davidse said.

The meeting stated that a good trend in the Montenegrin economy is expected to continue, but that the international market remains a challenge due to the slowdown in global growth.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the importance of investing in human capital and on the issue of labour migration. Prime Minister Marković emphasised that Montenegro is aware of the importance of retaining its educated and qualified staff and in this context cited an example of a decision to increase the salaries of health care workers by 12 percent from March this year and another three percent in 2021.
