Germany supports Montenegro in adopting Schengen standards and strengthening border security, and strengthening border security is the most concrete contribution to strengthening Europe, it was noted at today's meeting of Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić and Federal Minister of the Interior, Building and Community Horst Seehofer in Berlin.
"The Montenegrin police cooperate intensively with the German police in the fight against all forms of serious and organised crime, and in particular the smuggling of narcotics. We are jointly looking at the security challenges in Europe, and the conclusion of the Security Cooperation Agreement between Montenegro and the Federal Republic of Germany, which is being harmonised, is an indication of our joint efforts to further strengthen our friendly and partnership relations," Minister Nuhodžić said.
Seehofer stated that Germany is continuously supporting Montenegro towards full membership in the European Union. He noted that the Government of Montenegro achieved significant results in this field. "Germany recognises and appreciates this, as evidenced by the numerous donations of modern equipment used by the Police of Montenegro to protect the state border," Seehofer emphasised.
Ministers Nuhodžić and Seehofer also discussed illegal migration and other forms of crime, such as trafficking in human beings and terrorism. "Migration management is at the very top of the agenda of the Ministry of the Interior of Montenegro. The current Balkan migrant movement route requires that we cooperate more intensively with the partner services of Europe, especially in the fight against smuggling networks. We must be united in our commitment to combating human trafficking and smuggling of migrants," Minister Nuhodžić said.
The Minister reaffirmed the readiness of Montenegrin law enforcement agencies to continue to use the good practices and experiences of Germany, which will enable the acquisition of the latest knowledge and skills, similar to the most developed European countries.
Both sides expressed satisfaction that the forthcoming EU-Western Balkans Ministerial Forum on Justice and Home Affairs, under the German Presidency of the EU Council, will be held in Montenegro in September.
