Podgorica, Montenegro (7 February 2020) – Deputy Prime Minister Rafet Husović spoke earlier today with European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Olivér Várhelyi.

DPM Husović welcomed Commissioner Várhelyi, expressing expectation that his visit would give a new impetus to the activities of Montenegro's accession to the European Union.

"The state of Montenegro is aware of its obligations in the EU accession process and of all outstanding issues that we need to address in the coming period. I believe that all political and social actors must make additional contribution and effort in fulfilling their commitments and that all this with the help of EU partners will result in the achievement of the final goal, which is the accession of Montenegro to the community of the most developed countries in Europe. I must emphasise that there are still some forces in Montenegro, as well as outside the country, which persistently obstruct these processes, especially after Montenegro's membership in the NATO," Husović said.

Commissioner Várhelyi stressed that his visit was a real signal that the EU wants to work together with Montenegro in the process of its accession.

"My position is well known that at least one country will join the European Union during my term. Today, I am here to convey that message, that we want to cooperate, but also that it means more work and commitment in fulfilling obligations," Várhelyi said.

The two officials agreed that serious dialogue was needed within Montenegrin institutions in order to overcome the current situation and to continue its European path as soon as possible.
