Minister Bogdanović: Law on Freedom of Religion will prevent desecration of religious structures

Conscientious attitude towards property is one of the fundamental principles in the process of protection of cultural heritage, said Minister of Culture Aleksandar Bogdanović, commenting on the importance of the Law on Freedom of Religion.

So far, the country has been committed to investing as much as possible into the protection of the heritage it owns. These investments are getting bigger year-on-year. However, when it comes to religious structures, there are negative examples as well. The present holders of those structures have failed to maintain the churches as cultural heritage. And not only that, they have directly inflicted considerable damage to them, Minister Bogdanović said. It is unacceptable, Minister points out, that religious facilities are desecrated by drilling holes on the frescos in order to make physical space for the installation, such as the one in the Pljevlja Monastery.

Devastation of the original plastering just for the purposes of making space for placing interior equipment is just as unacceptable, Bogdanović stressed. He stressed there were many such examples.

The Law on Freedom of Religion stipulates a totally different treatment of these structures and facilities, considering their value and historical importance. We are going to earmark considerable funds for the implementation of these measures. I don’t need to remind you how the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral treated gravestones of Petrović-Njegoš dynasty at the Cetinje Monastery, which were exposed to completely inappropriate treatment and devastation. However, after the Government’s intervention, we are proud of this complex, Bogdanović said and added that heritage preservation is the process that is based on the implementation of the Law on Freedom of Religion.
