Bošković at North Atlantic Council meeting in Brussels

Brussels, Belgium (12 February 2020) -- Minister of Defence Predrag Bošković took part earlier today in a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, at the level of Defence Ministers, which is being held on 12 and 13 February 2020 in Brussels. 

The first annual meeting is an opportunity for defence ministers to summarize the effects of the past year and provide guidance for further work, on the basis of the achieved results, to the implementation the Alliance's activities, aimed at strengthening collective defence. Once again it was highlighted that the allies remain firmly committed to preservation of global peace and safety, and to this purpose, continue to act in line with the principles of projecting stability, bearing in mind the significance of having a stable environment at borders of the Alliance. In this regard, the meeting discussed continued involvement of allied forces in peacekeeping missions and operations and stressed that NATO would continue to provide a decisive response when it comes to the fight against terrorism, which requires the involvement of the entire international community. Through the comprehensive approach, allies will closely monitor developments in the Middle East to find the best solution for establishing long-term stability, ministers pointed out. 

Through the engagement of its members in international missions and operations, Montenegro clearly shows commitment to the Alliance's efforts, towards strengthening the overall security situation, Minister Bošković underlined. Speaking about the importance of the joint efforts of allies, in tackling threats coming from the Alliance's eastern borders, the Minister recalled that a third rotation was sent to Latvia in December, thus continuing its active contribution to the Alliance's Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in the East. Minister Bošković also stressed the significance of deepening the strategic partnership with the European Union, i.e. strengthening the transatlantic partnership, in order to more effectively tackle the challenges posed by modern security environment, which is characterised by the complexity, unpredictability and interconnection of international actors. 


Bearing in mind that almost all allies ratified the Accession Protocol, ministers welcomed the entry of North Macedonia into the Alliance over the next few weeks, highlighting that it will have a positive impact, not only on the internal situation in the country, but also on the Western Balkans as a whole. The accession of North Macedonia will be the best confirmation of an open door policy and an evidence of reform commitment deliver concrete results. The Ministers recalled the Alliance's full commitment to the Western Balkans, stressing the stability of the region cannot be viewed separately from the entire Euro-Atlantic community. 

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Minister signed an Amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding, regarding the multinational cooperation, in relation to the procurement of crucial army ammunition.
