FM Darmanović in Vilnius: Alliance between Montenegro and Lithuania confirmed, opening of Consulate enhances relations

Vilnius, Lithuania (20 February 2020) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović met earlier today with Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, Speaker of Parliament Viktoras Pranckietis and Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs Gediminas Kirkilas, while he was paying a working visit to the Republic of Lithuania. After discussion with Lithuanian officials, Minister Darmanović opened the Consulate of Montenegro in Vilnius, headed by the Honorary Consul.

In a discussion with Minister Linkevičius, alliance between Montenegro and Lithuania within NATO and partnership in the process of the European integration, as well as the common readiness to intensify political dialogue were underlined.  

Lithuania is one of the most successful post-communist countries that have joined the EU, which is reflected in its stability and progress in many areas, Minister Darmanović pointed out, congratulating the host on the 30th anniversary of independence.

Regarding bilateral cooperation, it is necessary to consider possibilities for informing Lithuania business people about investment opportunities in Montenegro, the Head of Montenegrin diplomacy noted.

The two countries have established excellent cooperation and as a positive example in the Western Balkans region, Montenegro can count on Lithuania's further strong support in the process of negotiations with the EU, Minister Linkevičius stressed.

During the meeting with Speaker of Parliament Pranckietis, a successful cooperation among representative authorities of the two countries was highlighted. Therefore, the conversation with Committee Chairman Kirkilas pointed to the significance of continuing enlargement policy of the EU to the Western Balkans.

All the meetings emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation in the areas of economics, tourism, defence, education, strategic communication and increasing the resistance to hybrid threats.

The officials also exchanged views on current events and security challenges in the Western Balkans, the Baltic region, but also the global level.

Continuing his visit, Minister Darmanović opened the Consulate in Vilnius, headed by Honorary Consul Daiva Perevičienė.

Opening of the first diplomatic mission of Montenegro in the Baltic region will contribute in deepening our ties and cooperation, with a focus on the economy. We will also work on boosting cultural ties, to bring our people closer, Minister Darmanović noted.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Lithuania Dalius Čekuolis also spoke at the ceremony. Members of the diplomatic and consular corps, members of the public and cultural life of Vilnius also attended the ceremony.
