Tax Administration: We estimate outstanding tax liabilities of Metropolitanate of Montenegro and Littoral to millions of euros

The Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral has outstanding tax liability of EUR 340 thousand and an estimated tax debt of millions of euros, Director of the Tax Administration Miomir M. Mugoša said.

"The Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral is the largest religious organisation in Montenegro, both in terms of the number of facilities it uses and the assets it disposes of, the amount of revenue it generates, and the number of accounts opened with commercial banks and the number of companies which it founded. However, it has a low level of tax compliance, both in terms of filing and paying taxes. The Metropolitanate has outstanding tax liability in the amount of EUR 340 thousand, but for 9 years no debt has been recorded, due to incomplete and incorrect registration data for determining tax liabilities. With this in mind, the estimated liabilities of this entity amount to millions of euros," the Director of the Tax Administration stressed.

Commenting on the tax obligations of religious communities, Director Mugoša said that the Tax Administration monitors the regularity of business of all religious communities and that the inspection process has been initiated in the Metropolitanate to verify the accuracy in calculating, reporting and paying tax liabilities.

"If the Metropolitanate fails to settle the obligations, the Tax Administration will proceed to collect the tax debt by applying compulsory measures, in accordance with the law, especially given that this religious community has a turnover of tens of millions of euros through a giro account. Enforced collection measures can also be applied to the property of the debtor, not to religious facilities, but only to general-purpose facilities, given that it has residential units in the elite part of the Capital City, participates in construction projects in Budva, and owns land in Buljarica intended for the construction of tourist and hotel capacities," the Director of the Tax Administration said.
