Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated today in a conference "From Thessaloniki 2003 to Zagreb 2020".
During his presentation, Minister Darmanović pointed to the symbolism of holding a conference in Thessaloniki, the city where the European journey of the Western Balkans began seventeen years ago. "We believe that the promises made in 2003 will be fulfilled and bring all the countries of the Region together at the same table with EU member states," the Minister said.
He expressed confidence that the decision to open EU accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania would send a positive signal for enlargement policy and further reform activities in the Western Balkans. In this regard, messages from the new European Commission – stating that one of their priorities will be the enlargement process – are encouraging.
Talking about the new methodology, recently presented by the European Commission, Minister Darmanović said that Montenegro would consider in detail the elements and compare which of the two methodologies is the optimal solution for continuing our negotiation process.
Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, the Montenegrin Foreign Minister said it was necessary for all the countries in the region to work together to create a better future, with a particular focus on economic development and infrastructure projects. Furthermore, he emphasised that Montenegro actively participates in more than 30 regional initiatives and chairs some of them. He also expressed his expectation that Croatia, during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, would further improve the process of accession negotiations.
