Podgorica, Montenegro (25 February 2020) -- Montenegro is an example for the whole world of how tourism potentials should be taken in advantage, in a sustainable way, it was noted at the meeting of Prime Minister Duško Marković and Director for Europe of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Alessandra Priante.
"We are strongly focused on tourism, with an emphasis in sustainable development. We want to preserve resources for the future generations and confirm commitment to the green economy, through a series of activities. I would recall that we are the first country beyond the EU, to adopt the Law on Climate Change," the Prime Minister stated.
Tourism is growing continuously and the number of tourists, overnight stays and incomes generated on this basis increases every year, the Prime Minister noted. According to the preliminary data, 2.62 million tourists visited Montenegro last year, which is growth of nearly 440 000 tourists, compared to the previous year. This is the best result in the history of Montenegrin tourism. It was recorded 14.5 million overnight stays. Recorded revenue flowing in from foreign and domestic holidaymakers amounted to EUR 1.14 billion, i.e. EUR 100 million, compared to the 2018. According to the report of the European Travel Commission, last year Montenegro was the first in Europe with a 21% growth in the number of tourists, while next to us only two other European countries had a double – digit growth rates.
The Prime Minister specified that besides tourism, the Government is particularly focused towards agriculture, energy and strengthening of the overall infrastructure.
Noting Montenegro as mostly flight destination, the Government decided to valorise the airports, in order to improve the availability and boost the existing infrastructure, Prime Minister Marković stressed.
Priante noted she was in constant amazement at Government's understanding, regarding the significance of tourism to the state and its economy. The World Tourism Organisation, as a specialised agency of the United Nations, wants to continue high - quality cooperation with the Government and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism in further promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism, the UNWTO Director pointed out.
She announced that WTO Secretary - General Zurab Pololikashvili should visit Montenegro, in the autumn.
